Older men encouraged to socialise – in sheds

Here’s a story we love – about a Staffordshire charity that hopes to help older men lead a more social and active life by practising existing DIY skills or learning new ones.

And its title? Men In Sheds – aiming to bring participants together in a workshop-type environment that they will perhaps find more amenable than a conventional social club.

Local paper The Staffordshire Newsletter has the story:

“This project will improve the health and wellbeing of men around Stafford and District, but would not be possible unless dedicated volunteers wish to help.” Age Concern Cheshire already runs a Men’s Shed scheme, where older men can enjoy tea and ‘shed therapy’.

The Cheshire project was inspired by the Australian Men’s Shed movement, which involves thousands of Australian men of all ages and helps address health and social issues. Read the full story here…

Now, that’s a good idea if we ever heard one. You can read more about the Australian Men’s Shed movement here and find out more about your local branch of Age UK here.
